Written Statement by the Ruler of Sharjah, dated November 17, 1953, confirming
that Article 1 (a) of the Agreement of September 1, 1937, includes the
Sea-Bed in the Territory of Sharjah
I, Shaikh Saqr bin Sultan bin Saqr Ruler of Sharjah confirm my agreement
that the wording of Article 1 (a) of the Oil Concession Agreement signed on
17th September 1937 c/t. 11th Rajab 1356 has the following meaning: —
The area to which this Agreement applies is the Slate of Sharjah, including
all Islands and Territorial Waters appertaining thereto and all the sea-bed and
sub-soil under these Territorial Waters, including the Territorial Waters of the
Islands, and all the sea-bed and sub-soil lying beneath the waters which lie outside
the Territorial Waters of Sharjah and contiguous to the Territorial Waters of
Sharjah over which the Ruler’s jurisdiction and control extends or may hereafter
extend, or which now or hereafter may form part of the areas over which the
Ruler has or may have mineral rights (hereinafter referred to as “ The State ”)
being all that Territory included in the Shaikhdom of Sharjah.
The Shaikh agrees that when a delimitation of the lands and the waters
appertaining to the State of Sharjah have been determined the area covered by the
Concession will be coterminous with the limits so determined.

Political Agreement between His Majesty’s Government and Petroleum
Concessions Limited, relating to the Sharjah Oil Concession, dated
November 12, 1937
This Agreement dated the twelfth day of November One thousand nine
hundred and thirty-seven is made between His Majesty’s Government in the
United Kingdom (hereinafter called “ His Majesty’s Government ”) of the one
part and Petroleum Concessions Limited (hereinafter called “ the Company ” which
expression shall where the context so admits be deemed to include its successors
and/or assignees and shall also be deemed to include any subsidiary Company)
of the other part.
Whereas Petroleum Development (Trucial Coast) Limited is a Subsidiary
Company of Petroleum Concessions Limited.
And whereas in the event of the Company obtaining a concession from the
Sheikh of Sharjah (hereinafter called “ the Sheikh ”) certain responsibilities will
devolve on His Majesty’s Government, the Company has agreed with His Majesty’s
Government as follows: —
1 Petroleum Concessions Limited and any subsidiary company shall be and
remain a British company registered in Great Britain and having its principal
place of business in Great Britain, and its Chairman shall at all times be a British
subject.
