Very few, and none too trustworthy, representations exist of the merchant ships which
plied the Mediterranean at the height of Cretan sea power in the fifteenth century b.c.
This model, from the tomb of Tutankhamun, represents rather a river pleasure-craft than
an ocean-going ship, but it gives some idea, with its lateen rig and double steering oars,
of the probable appearance of the ships of the time.
