This scene from the side of a wooden chest from Tutankhamon’s tomb has all the
crowded clarity of a Persian miniature. It shows the pharaoh, at the head of the disci
plined ranks of the Egyptian army, attacking and routing a disorderly rabble of Egypt’s
traditional Asiatic enemies. On the opposite side a similar panel shows him defeating
Sudanese enemies. It is almost certain that Tutankhamon took the field against neither.
