At Abu Simbel, three hundred miles along the Nile south of Thebes and close to the
borders of Nubia, four colossal statues of Rameses II (1301-1235 b.c.), each sixty-seven
feet high, flank the entrance to a temple cut in the living rock to a depth of over two
£ hundred feet. The great pillared hall within is adorned with reliefs depicting the phar-
< aoh’s exploits, including his war against the Hittites and the inconclusive battle of Cadesh.
