Not far from Hattusas in Asia Minor lies the open-air temple of Yazilikaya, where the
sheer walls of several interconnecting canyons are carved with representations of all
the gods of the extensive Hittite pantheon. The temple was executed by order of the
Hittite king Tudhaliyas IV, who lived at the time (thirteenth century b.c.) when Ram-
eses II was also expressing his greatness and his piety by carving the living rock of
Abu Simbel.
