On the island of Bahrain in the Persian Gulf the merchant sailors of Dilmun raised a
temple in the latter half of the Third Millennium b.c. It remained in use until well into
the Second Millennium, and was twice pulled down and built on a larger scale. The tem­
ple stood upon an artificial platform held by high retaining walls. This photograph
shows the wall of the terrgee of the second temple and, in the foreground, the later ter­
race wall of the third temple.
