On the island of Bahrain in the Persian Gulf the merchant sailors of Dilmun raised a
temple in the latter half of the Third Millennium b.c. It remained in use until well into
the Second Millennium, and was twice pulled down and built on a larger scale. The tem
ple stood upon an artificial platform held by high retaining walls. This photograph
shows the wall of the terrgee of the second temple and, in the foreground, the later ter
race wall of the third temple.
