WOMEN'S HOSPITALS
(Report by Dr. I. M. A. Doeg, Lady Medical Officer).
Reviewing the work in the women’s department a definite advance can be seen in several
directions.
In the first place the nursing situation has greatly improved owing to the recruitment locally
of fully trained Indian nurses who arc married and who have come to stay in Bahrain with their
husbands. There arc certain drawbacks attached to this scheme but on the whole these arc over-
weighed by the staff showing greater stability and contentment. It is hoped in the near future to
employ a Sister on permanent night duty.
The newly built Isolation Hospital was opened during the year. The opening had been delayed
owing to the difficulty of obtaining suitable staff. This has been overcome and a fully trained Indian
nurse in now giving good and devoted service there. Encouraging results have been obtained from
the use of streptomycin for the Tuberculosis Cases and also from the use of the new preparation
" Sulphetronc ” in the cases of leprosy. Although a period of about two years treatment is necess
ary in these cases before complete cure can be established still the immediate results have proved
most satisfactory in this condition which until now has baffled all those who have dealt with it.
The maternity department’s work continues satisfactorily and many normal cases now come
to hospital for delivery and many of them attend the out-patient clinic throughout the pregnancy.
The infants show an increisc in average weight and the general health of the mothers appears to be
better and fewer eases of atresia arc seen now. There appears also to be a decrease in the incidence
of venereal disease.
