EDUCATION
Boys* Schools.
(From the report of Mr. Ahmed A1 Umran, Director of Education.)
At the beginning of the 1369-70 school year, in October 1950, there were 3,206 boys attending
the village, primary and secondary schools ; this was an increase of 421 over the previous year. The
increase in numbers was mostly in the infants and. primary sections of the town schools. New class
rooms were added on the first floor of the Muharraq School, which is the oldest school in Bahrain,
making it possible to accept all the boys who had completed their course in the Infant School. At
the beginning of the new term another Infant School was opened in a house in the town which was
lent for this purpose by His Highness the Ruler, this school accommodated 170 boys. The question
of building yet another school in Muharraq is under consideration but the project cannot be taken in
hand until the three new school buildings in Manamah have been completed, it may be possible to
undertake this work in 1371.
In Manamah about 350 boys had to be refused admission owing to lack of accommodation
and staff in the two Primary Schools. The situation in Manamah will improve when the Secondary
School moves to the new building on the edge of the town, the East Primary School will then take
over the class rooms which arc now used as a Secondary School. At present the Secondary School
occupies rooms in the same building as the East Primary School.
Many of the boys who applied for admission came from Mutawa or Quran school which are
numerous in the towns and villages. These schools are attended by boys and girls from the age of
