                       Village Schools.—Village schools were filled to capacity throughout the year and fewer
                  boys left school before completing their course. Several boys from the village schools made good
                  progress in the Manamah schools, entering the hostel as boarders and attending the town Primary
                  and Secondary Schools. One of the objects of the hostel is to enable the best boys from the village
                  schools to acquire Primary and Secondary education. One student who started in a village school
                  graduated from the Teachers’ Training Course and started work as a master at Sitra.
                       Special Course.—In the spring a short course for teachers of English was arranged by the
                   British Council centre in Basra. The course was held in the hostel and lectures were given by two
                   officials of the British Council, Iraq, and the Inspector of English Teaching, Iraq Ministry of
                   Education. The experiment was most successful and was much appreciated by the Bahrain teachers
                   and students.
                       General.—Sporting events included inter-school contests in football, volley ball, basket
                   ball and swimming.
                       The Secondary School boys held an exhibition of drawing, painting, modelling and map making
                   during the summer. His Highness the Ruler and H.E. Shaikh Abdullah bin Isa Alkhalifah visited
                   the exhibition.

                        During the% Spring Holidays the Director of Education visited Kuwait and Basra to meet and
                   to discuss educational matters with the local authorities.
                        In the summer the Director represented Bahrain at the second Cultural Conference of the
                   Arab States which was held in Alexandria. A comprehensive report dealing with education in Bahrain,
                   which was prepared by the Director, was distributed to the representatives of the Arab States who
                   attended the conference. The report included various statistics on education in Bahrain of which the
                   following arc of interest:—
