probably the cleanest town in Bahrain and this may have some connection with the fact that boys
from the Hedd School are outstanding both in school work and sports. Apart from some shopkeepers
of Persian origin the inhabitants arc Arabs.
The municipal vegetable market, which was recently completed, brought in an income of over
Rs. 800. The municipality carried out its usual duties of town cleaning, supervising coffee shops and
bakers’ shops and the inspection of weights and scales.

Seven new estates were administered by the department and the proceeds of ten compensation
awards from oil companies were dealt with. Two of the compensation cases were in respect of persons
employed in Saudi Arabia and in Qatar. The number of new estates which were dealt with was
considerably less than in the previous year.
Collections of rents and leases amounted to Rs. 1,39,000 which was more than in 1368. Three
properties in Manamah were sold, for Rs. 19,000 to satisfy claims against estates and the department
purchased 5 houses and 3 plots of land for which Rs. 55,000 was paid, in addition Rs. 19,000 was
spent on repairs and improvements to property and in building a house for letting.
During the year loans amounting to Rs. 10,59,826 were repaid and Rs. 78,027 was collected in
interest on loans. The Government advanced to the department a further sum of Rs. 2,30,000 from
the Deposit Account to be used for granting loans, on which the department pays to the Government
