During the first few days of the month of Ramadhan, the month during which more meat is
consumed than in any other month of the year—local butchers raised the price of meat to a height
beyond the means of the working classes, there were naturally a considerable number of complaints
and the Government called a meeting of the butchers who were informed in no uncertain terms that
drastic action would be taken against them if they refused to reduce retail prices of meat. This action
coupled with perhaps the largest import in any one month of livestock brought prices of meat down
to the lowest level reached throughout the year. Altogether during the month of Ramadhan 326
head of cattle and 9,493 head of sheep and goats were imported.

As in the previous year the Government once again after a meeting and against a certain amount
of opposition by growers, decided to allow the import of dates into Bahrain, free of all Customs charges,
and in addition barter sugar at a rate of Rs. 40/- per bag of 224 lbs. would be given to importers at
a scale of 10 bags of sugar for every 1,000 baskets of dates imported. This action together with reports
of excellent crops both locally and in Iraq has kept the price of dates at a level lower than in the
                  previous year.
Fish supplies during the year were again well short of requirements, much of the fish caught in
nearby waters being taken to Saudi Arabia where higher prices were obtained than local controlled
                   prices.
The bazaar was well stocked throughout the year with all types of imported consumer goods
but it was regrettably noted that prices for all commodities, cars, radios, gramophones, woollens,
