hosiery, haberdashery, tinned provisions, etc., showed an overall increase in price of about 15 per cent.
The increase was at the source of supply, not local, and present indications are that further increases
arc to be expected.
CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT
(Report by Mr. G. W. R. Smith, m.b.e., Director of Customs and Port Officer.)
The revenue collected by the Customs Department from all sources, including boat licences,
exceeded last year's revenue by Rs. 1,68,192 and exceeded the amount which was anticipated in the
budget by Rs. 8,66,815.
The continued increase in Customs revenue was due, more to the increased cost at source of
supply, of certain commodities, rather than to increased imports.
The decrease in the value of Direct Transhipment cargoes was due to the slowing down of
operations by nearby Oil Companies.
Improvements to Customs Facilities :
During the year under review one new warehouse was completed with a storage capacity of
about 3,000 tons dead-weight capacity and the construction of a similar additional-warehouse is in
progress.
In addition a new railway crane was erected with a lifting capacity of up to 12 \ tons. Further
sea areas are being reclaimed to provide for more storage space.
