banefulness of their heresies by convincing arguments and the clearest
demonstration.
He grew to manhood in the time of MaViyab-bin-Abi Safyan, and
lived to the time of 'Abd-el-Malck-biu-Marwan.§ to whom he wrote
his celebrated epistles aud exhortations on moral conduct.
The origin of the sect is traced up to 'Abdallah-bin-cl-'Abbass, and
Abu-Slid' Tlia, Jabir-bin-Zeyd. It derives from the people of Nah-
rawdn,|| aud Naklrilch, and from the survivors from the fields of Safini
