SUMMARY OF THE YEAR'S HEALTH
A good year with no epidemics, and a decline in Malaria and Venereal disease. For the first
time on record, no Smallpox ca;e was seen.
The Staff—Dr. I. M. A. Doeg arrived back from leave in January. Miss W. E. Millson newly

same time. Miss A. Allsop arrived in October to be in charge of the nursing
work of the Women’s Hospital, and especially to supervise the maternity section.
Dr. Mary Aaraham was enlisted for the Women’s Hospital.
Cholera—Rigid quarantine precautions were adopted, and all port staff were inoculated.
Large amounts of vaccine were kept under reserve, but fortunately no case was
reported.

drainage schemes were carried out.

5. Six new latrines for Manama were passed for construction.
6. Markets taken under more rigid hygiene control, repaired and painted.
School Medical Work—A general examination of all the boys gave the following results:—
1. The town schools showed a higher standard of health than the village ones, especially
regarding trachoma, skin infections, and general cleanliness.
2. The town schools have advanced greatly over the last few years. Active trachoma has
diminished.
3. The village schools show a high incidence of active and therefore contagious trachoma,
especially Badaya and Suk-ul-Khamis.
4. Trachoma shows a higher incidence in boys up to the age of 10.
5. Scalp infections were common in Suk-ul-Khamis, and Rifa’a showed marked evidence
of lice.
