              (3)  Three old generating sets of a total rated output of 400 kW will be dismantled and
                   removed to provide the necessary space for the erection of new plant.
              (4)  The installation of a new Battery Charging Plant for mechanical Transport and other
                   services will be completed.

              (5)  The installation of an electricity Meter Testing Plant will commence upon its receipt.
                   This is an urgent requirement owing to the adverse effects on the accuracy of electri­
                   city meters caused by climatic conditions.

            It is proposed to replace and re-calibrate all meters, of which there are at present 2,500 in use
       at regular periodic intervals.
            Telephone Section.—The total number of subscribers at the end of the year was 131 and
       many additional applications for telephones were refused owing to the commencement of work on
       the new Automatic System. When this is installed most of the existing lines and instruments will
       become redundant to future requirements.

            Shaikh Hamad Bridge Section.—The Bridge operated throughout the year without  a
       single failure. Anti-corrosive and finished painting was commenced and is still in progress.
            Workshops Department.—During the year 1366 the Workshops continued to do all the
       requisite repairs for the Power House, M/T Department and other Government Departments requiring
       the use of specialised machine tools. The total number of jobs undertaken for these Departments
       was 291. In addition, 63 jobs were undertaken for Messrs. Petroleum Development (Qatar) Ltd.,
       Petroleum Concessions Ltd., Messrs. Gray Mackenzie & Company Ltd., Royal Air Force, and the
       general public.
            This Department has already more than justified its existence by the quality of its work and
       also the expeditious manner in which it was completed. Additional machine tools received and
       installed during the year consist of one " Edgwick " 6\” lathe and one pipe screwing machine.

            Transport Department.—During 1366 the Government Garage carried out the major repair
       and servicing of all Government vehicles (sixty-two vehicles).
            During 1366 :14 Dodge trucks (ex-Army) and six of other makes were disposed of.
            Six Humber Station Wagons were received from England and three Dennis 5 tonners and two
       Austin Tipping trucks were purchased locally.
            Other vehicles on order from England but not yet received consist of eight Humber pick-ups,
       one Humber Ambulance and two Humber touring cars. During 1366 the Government of Bahrain
       imported from England M/T spare parts valued at Rs. 80,958/-
            Water Scheme.—Two twin manifolded wells for the new water system were drilled and com­
       pleted by the Bahrain Petroleum Company during the year;

            The contractors for the installation of the scheme commenced work and have made good
       progress to date with the laying of the mains and erection of the water tower and pump house.

            Staff.—It has not been possible to engage a competent Superintendent for Electricity Dis­
       tribution and Maintenance although continual enquiries have been made in India. This important
       position has been vacant during the past x year and 10 months and has been partially filled by the
       foreman linesman and cable jointer. In addition to all electrical distribution and maintenance out­
       side the Power House, the Superintendent is also responsible for the maintenance of the electrically
       driven Swing Bridge mechanism, water pump systems to the Hospital and other Government buildings,
       A. C. units fans, and refrigerator units, power and telephone lines and their associated equipment.
       For such a variety of work, it is essential that the person filling the position should be experienced
       in both electrical and mechanical maintenance and repair.
