                              To ascertain how far its passage could be made
                              available for steamers was one of the prin­
                              cipal objects to which our attention was di­

                              rected during the late survey of the Red Sea.
                              Nothing, however, connected with its naviga­
                              tion, beyond what will be found in the pre­
                              ceding chapters, has yet been made public;
                              and, however much their value might have
                              been enhanced, had the following remarks

                              emanated from those more immediately in
                              command of the expedition, yet, as I was long
