To ascertain how far its passage could be made
available for steamers was one of the prin
cipal objects to which our attention was di
rected during the late survey of the Red Sea.
Nothing, however, connected with its naviga
tion, beyond what will be found in the pre
ceding chapters, has yet been made public;
and, however much their value might have
been enhanced, had the following remarks
emanated from those more immediately in
