These two mails were then sent to Bahrain for onward trans
mission and produced a hurried request from the Postal Superintendent j
in Manama to discontinue the use of this canceller and to forward mail
to him with the stamps uncanccllcd until such time as a Post Office !
         canceller was provided for Doha.

Earliest use of the Doha canceller

Subsequent despatches, until receipt of the Doha canceller, can
thus once again be recognised as being of Qatar origin only if the sender’s
name appears. This period lasted only a short time, for the Type 2
canceller is recorded as early as July 13th, 1950 (on Bahrain stamps).
It was originally struck in violet but had become a greenish-blue before
the end of the year and a rather dirty blue-black by early 1951. The
colour was a clear violet again in late 1952 and early 1953, and in
November 1953 a bright blue. By 1955 it was being struck in normal
          black.
