For twenty years, from the time I moved to New York in 1975, until I moved to
London in 1996, I resided in the Manhattan neighborhood known as Yorkville,
the roughly twenty square block area between East 79th Street and 86th Street,
between Third Avenue and the East River. That was my neighborhood—those
were the days when New York still had neighborhoods—and that, to a large
extent, was my world. And every other weekend or so, when the light and the
mood availed, I would go on a photo walk, and there would be an Edward
Hopper in my viewfinder.
