World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day is a day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social
stigma. It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global
mental health organisation with members and contacts in more than 150 countries.
Here in the UK there are several prominent campaigns that continue to spread the message that ‘it’s ok, not
to be ok’. Notably Heads Together, which was founded in 2017 and co-ordinated by the Royal Family. Heads
Together has spearheaded a major review by the government in mental health in the workplace and is getting
both public and political prominence.
• One in three of the UK work-force have been formally diagnosed with a mental health disorder at some
point in their lifetime.
• 75% of mental illness (excluding dementia) starts before the age of 18.
• Men aged between 40-49 years have the highest suicide rates in Great Britain.
• 75% of people with a diagnosable mental illness receive no treatment at all.

Over the coming months, we will be sharing with you our plans to underpin our commitment to making the
mental health and the wellbeing of our employees a priority across the business.
Look out for further updates in upcoming issues.
