I have a good amount of experience with Boards. With the CASA Board in particular I have interacted with them regular-
ly. I am comfortable with them and have interfaced with them on many occasions during Board meetings and conference
calls. I also have experience with Boards of Directors from my lobbying experience. We had three clients with executive
boards who were trade organizations. I don't think any two boards are the same - they all have a different color if you
will. One thing that I like about our executive board is that they are very down to business - they serve their purpose very
well and I appreciate that. In terms of presenting and researching a public-policy issue is something I am very familiar
with. As well as a very high priority fill. I have a good amount of experience providing context for how legislation is man-
aged and how to explain it and feel very comfortable doing that.
5. Please describe your management experience and your approach to employee development and evaluation. (as a
follow up if needed: Describe the most challenging human resources issue you have faced.)
I have very recently in the past year been given the opportunity to bring staff on board. This is my first foray into manag-
ing an employee. I have thoroughly enjoyed having him on board - he is incredibly helpful and is learning and teaching
me every day. It was my first experience in hiring someone for this specific for this position. It was really helpful in under-
standing the process. I was able to draft the position description and participated in the screenings, ended up selecting
Jerod and determined the appropriate compensation package. I think that was really an interesting experience for me,
and then we also had the opportunity to do a performance evaluation with him. Because he is so good - it was all very
positive and we were able to get him positive feedback and we didn't have anything negative to say to him. My approach
to employee development - I like to optimize people's really good skills. Where I recognize Jerod is very analytical - he is
certainly interested in data and management and that kind of thing. That's kind of my approach - I take a lead by exam-
ple approach - I explain along the way why we are going in a certain direction and the reasoning behind going in a certain
direction. I like to keep an ongoing dialogue. I also like to make sure we are recognizing accomplishments. I like to make
sure that when I'm talking to our Board or other external stakeholders I make sure to give him kudos where they are due.
6. Please describe your experience in coordinating, tracking and reporting out on the implementation of organizational
goals, objectives, policies and procedures.
I kind of want to tie it back to the legislative work. That is where we do the most tracking and implementing direction
and then reporting back to our committee on how it is going. The legislative committee comes together 8 times per
year. In the Spring we have a really big meeting. We go through all of the bills of interest and give us marching orders.
In that case we will coordinate with the legislative committee - we will call out a sub committee and work with them on
an ongoing basis and then we would take that to the legislative office and offer it as an amendment and from there it is
a negotiation of sorts. All the while I am communicating back to the legislative sub committee so I think that is kind of
what you are after.
We do report out on the legislation that we are working on - we make sure to keep them involved (the Committee). I use
their input on whether I have been successful. I guess that the measure of success is whether I have accomplished what
they have asked of me based on the different bills that I am working on.
7. The Executive Director will work closely with other state and regional organizations, with the legislature and regulatory
agencies. Please describe a time that you have been instrumental to change and had to work with external stakeholders
in accomplishing this change.
I can point to just in the past two weeks. We are in a pivotal moment in the legislative session. We had a bill introduced
