Why are you interested in the ED opportunity with CASA?
I'm interested because it is the next logical step for me. I have been with CASA for 7 years. I have done virtually everything that
there is to do for CASA. I have done a lot around where we have been and where we are headed. ED has an appeal because I
would love to guide the agency forward.
2. Please describe your most recent position and day-to-day responsibilities.
I do a variety of things for CASA that fall into a number of organizations - within the different things that we do - I cover the
regulatory side - working with State Water Board members, draft comment letters, and advocate in a variety of areas. We host
monthly meetings. That's the regulatory side of things. During the legislative season I help with some of the stuff that Jessica
does in terms of advocacy. I help draft talking points. On the federal side I work with our federal lobbyists in D.C. and help facil-
itate those meetings. I'm also the lead person for our communications program - I help put together our newsletter - get CASA
staff to contribute and work with our Admin. I review and improve our social media calendars. I also do a variety of projects
and then also individual projects that support our advocacy - where we looked up the impact of conservation provided review
and feedback on the draft. I sat on a panel a few weeks ago to cover the report and dig into the detail on that in a more public
setting. I also do some of the budgeting related work. Last year I helped Debbie Welch - that involves projections and staff time
and all those kinds of things. Board interactions there is usually some item that I have in terms of items an other items that the
Board needs to weigh in on. Conference planning - we do two major conferences per year. For the last year and a half or so -
finding speakers - finding keynotes - doing all that kind of stuff to get the CASA programs together. On the legal side, I facilitate
four attorneys meetings per year - which involves a lot of email questions back and forth facilitating questions on various items.
3. What is your assessment regarding current water, climate and other environmental issues California is facing and how do you
think CASA can best address these issues?
I think that there is a lot of different ways we can do that. I think that the future of what we can be doing is trying to figure out
how we can integrate all these different programs. It will be climate change adaptation as well as climate change resiliency. At
the same time there is omissions crackdowns coming that we haven't had to deal with at that scale before. Recycled water is
a huge thing for us - folks are going to be looking to us as a major source of supply - we have to work directly with the water
purveyors. I think the most important thing for us is making sure we have inroads on the climate change side and the regulators
and make sure we are aware of what's going on. We have to be ready and proactive.
4. Please describe the roles in which you have had a relationship with a board of directors, and what your role was in those ex-
amples. Can you provide an example of when you have had to research a policy, legislative or regulatory item and present your
findings to the Board?
That is my job description right now. I deal with our Board Members on a regular basis. Dealing with our Board is something
that we are used to. I bring updates on where we are at in terms of regulatory projects. I have managed a couple of the Board
meetings, I have put together Board agendas. And then dealing with, I'm not sure if you are just focusing on our Board as an
association, but I also deal with board members who are members of CASA. I have spent a lot of time with our Board - and it
has been enjoyable.
On the regulatory side I deal with nutrient related issues, I have done special projects related to those. Often time will bring my
findings back to the Board. A big project we did a few years ago was around third party citizen lawsuits where we explained to
the Board in advance and brought back a large report. Most recently since Jessica has been onboard I would deal more with
legislative items. We changed our bylaws so that we can approve them within the attorney's committee without bringing them
