Subject: CASA Executive Director Position
Dear Mr. O’Donnell:
I herewith submit this letter to you of my sincere interest in the position of Executive Director for the
California Association of Sanitation Agencies.
I am a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of California with a BS in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and
Space Science, a MS in Environmental Engineering, a MS in Atmospheric and Space Science, and a
graduate certificate in the Program for Industrial Ecology, each from the University of Michigan – Ann
Arbor (U-M).
I began my career as a Research Associate at U-M’s Center for Sustainable Systems performing life cycle
assessments of local wastewater treatment facilities and developing a university-wide environmental
(sustainability) reporting system. The reporting system is used by U-M for tracking its efforts toward
achieving targets and reporting to its stakeholders (the President, Board, staff, students, and alumni).
After completing the reporting system in 2005, I moved to Walnut Creek, CA, to begin working as an
engineering consultant for Carollo Engineers (Carollo) and focus on my passion – water! I was hired to
examine the potential for a new service area for the company – determining the impact of climate
change and the appropriate actions to be taken (and/or advise upon) to increase the resilience of the
water and wastewater sector. I am acutely aware of California’s regulatory and legislative landscape and
truly believe in the environmental, social, and economic benefits of proper treatment and recycling of
wastewater and biosolids. Serving as Carollo’s Climate Change and Sustainable Solutions Lead and as
CASA’s Climate Change Program Manager, I have been able to mentor/train internal and agency
engineers and planning staff while working to raise awareness across professional organizations,
wastewater agencies, regulators, and policy-makers of how critical wastewater treatment (resource
recovery) facilities are to building and maintaining resilient communities.
I have listed some highlights of my 15-year career below for your consideration. I believe I possess the
experience, technical competency, progressive leadership, political astuteness, and environmental
stewardship the CASA Executive Director position requires in order to forward the interests of the
Association.
– Serving as CASA’s Climate Change Program Manager (since 2013, previously known as the California
Wastewater Climate Change Group), implementing their vision to be the recognized providers of
education, leadership, and advocacy for California's wastewater community on climate change
issues. Through this position, which is highly visible and requires ongoing engagement with CASA
membership and the regulatory community, I have established strong relationships with key
regulators at numerous state agencies, as well as at regional and national levels. I have also
developed a thorough understanding of CASA’s mission, operations, and membership over the
years, while building effective working relationships with staff in completing tasks as a team. Greg
