organizations succeed and fail. I have personally helped deliver large- and small-scale multimodal
transportation improvements. But most of all, I have learned that the sensitive politics of governing
boards and varied municipal leadership styles requires deft skills to navigate objectively, fairly,
and with an eye toward providing decision makers with all of the tools and information they need
to make critical decisions for community betterment. Lastly, my two master’s degrees in
Geography and Transportation Planning from UCLA’s School of Public Policy, my bachelor’s
degree in Political Science from Chico State University and my Associate Degree in Earth

Sciences from Santa Rosa Junior College have provided the educational and academic foundation
               for my professional successes.

Joining Sacramento’s already highly skilled leadership team would be an honor, as I am familiar
with the city’s successes and importance to the state of California as the political capital. There is

a growing need for reliable, transparent and service-focused local governments. My organizational
and financial skills may enhance the implementation of the Public Works Department’s programs
and objectives. At the same time, I relish the opportunity to learn more about the specifics of the
organizational culture, history, and procedures from community members, elected officials and
those with institutional knowledge. I greatly enjoy problem solving, collaborating with
stakeholders, working with the public, and being a “go to” person for my managers and elected
officials. I have a history of cultivating cooperative relationships with professional contacts and I
emphasize two-way communication, a calm and tactful approach, and confidence in my colleagues
whether as a personnel supervisor or member of a working team or committee.

Finally, as a proven statewide leader of controversial projects often clouded by competing
interests, I can bring creativity to this critical position. I thrive with large workloads and am at
home in a city atmosphere. I strive to be humble, am always learning, and I am no stranger to
either making or admitting mistakes. My bilingual Spanish skills, humorous style, passion for the

transportation field, and energetic approach may help Sacramento continue with its current
successes as well as create bold new ones. If I am fortunate enough to be selected, I will strive to
exceed the objectives outlined for the position and make a long-term career investment of this
opportunity. Thank you for your consideration.

               Sincerely,

               Peter J. Brown
