In addition, substituting a sweetener like
xylitol for sucrose can be helpful. Xylitol is a
well known sweetener with a long history of
safety over a wide range of intakes that, at
least in animal studies, has been shown to be
helpful in preventing age-related collagen
degradation and depletion. It may also
protect against osteoporosis (based on animal
studies) and serves as food for beneficial
bacteria in the gut, thereby helping to improve
digestive health.
Fibre rich carbohydrates like brown, wild or basmati rice, buckwheat, barley, quinoa,
steel-cut oats and low glycemic load foods like black beans, chickpeas, black-eyed peas
and lentils should form the second largest element of consumption in an anti-aging
dietary program.
Protein
Through various mechanisms, red meat tends to promote inflammation. Red meat
consumption should be limited in favour of other sources of protein such as poultry, fish,
tofu, tempeh, and omega-3 enriched eggs. Collectively, these should form the third
largest portion of the diet.
To reduce the risk of any possible contamination of the meat consumed from hormones,
antibiotics and other undesirable substances, it should be sourced from grass fed, wild
and/or organically raised animals. In fact, choosing to eat organically derived foods may
be a good idea regardless of the food group under consideration.
