Double Award Science
(AQA Combined Science: Trilogy 8464)
Science is an exciting subject that is constantly changing and at the forefront of new discoveries
that have far reaching applications for the world we live in. It remains a very practical subject and,
wherever possible, pupils will carry out experiments for themselves to aid their understanding.
The new Combined Science course is a fabulous foundation for further study of science, and this
course now dovetails well with what is covered at A level. There is a significant amount of additional
content than in previous courses and a much higher mathematical demand, so pupils will have to
work hard from the very start of the year. To help with this we do start teaching some of the topics
in Year 9 which gives a good opportunity for effective revision before the exams.
Units of study and examination criteria:
Pupils will study three units -
Biology
Pupils will explore topics including cell biology; organisation; bioenergetics; inheritance, variation
and evolution; and ecology.
Chemistry
Topics will cover atomic structure and the periodic table; the properties of matter; quantitative
chemistry; organic chemistry; chemical analysis; and the chemistry of the atmosphere.
Physics
This unit will encompass the topics of energy; electricity; particle model of matter; and atomic
structure; forces; waves; and magnetism and electromagnetism.
There are six papers at the end of Year 11 - two per unit. Each paper will be 1 hour and 15 minutes
long and count for 16.7% of the final grade.
Pupils are required to complete a set number of practicals to achieve the practical endorsement.
