Physical Education
(Edexcel GCSE 1PE0)
Physical Education provides learners with a well-rounded and full introduction to the world of
sport and sport science. Pupils will develop their understanding of how the mind and body work in
relation to performance when undertaking physical activity. With a heavy emphasis upon science,
pupils are able to explore the intricacies of the human body and the effects of exercise, as well as
exploring strategies and mechanisms used by top athletes to achieve peak performance.
Units of study and examination criteria:
Pupils will study four units -
Fitness and Body Systems (36%)
Topics include applied anatomy and physiology, movement analysis, physical training and
use of data. Pupils will learn about the structure and functions of the musculoskeletal and
cardiorespiratory systems, applying this to practical sporting situations.
Health and Performance (24%)
Areas of this unit cover health, fitness and well-being, sport psychology, socio-cultural influences
and use of data. Pupils will analyse the importance of a healthy active lifestyle, learn the
components of fitness required for individual sports, and the effects of diet upon sports
performances.
Practical Performance (30%)
Pupils will be assessed in one team activity, one individual activity and one other of their choice.
Pupils will be assessed in their skills in isolation and in a competitive situation.
Personal Exercise Programme (PEP) (10%)
Pupils will design, complete and analyse a six week personal exercise programme to improve their
performance in a sport of their choice.
