STEP EXPAND YOUR
7 VISIBILITY
This action item relates to the third aspect of your professional equity,
which is what people know about you (and how many people know it).
Author Brian Koslow has said that “There is no advertisement as powerful
as a positive reputation traveling fast” and this is exactly what you
want your professional reputation to do for you. Your goal is to expand
the visibility and impact of that reputation into your target professional
community.
Some ways to get started:
1. Get involved in the local chapters of relevant professional
associations – don’t just join, but volunteer, participate, and
contribute so people have a chance to get to know you and see
how terrific you are.
2. Become active in relevant online communities, such as those on
LinkedIn; ask questions, share information, start making a name
for yourself as a strong contributor.
3. Follow up in positive ways with the people with whom you’ve
done informational interviews. How? Share information you’ve
come across you think will interest them, ask intelligent follow-up
questions; ask if there are ways you can help them professionally
to help return the favor of the time they shared with you. Even if
there isn’t anything at this point you can do to be of value, just the
fact that you offered will signal your value to them as a professional
connection.
4. If you’re comfortable with writing, consider writing on topics
where you’re developing an expertise of potential interest to your
target community. Whether in print or online, becoming known
as a person developing an expertise on any topic immediately
distinguishes you as someone who has value to add.
As with your efforts to expand your professional network in the relevant
direction, expanding your positive professional visibility in that same
direction will help you strengthen your ability to bridge into your new career
opportunity.
