STEP EXPAND YOUR
6 NETWORK IN YOUR
TARGET DIRECTION
Remember when we discussed the network part of your professional
equity? The way this works for people transitioning careers is that your
goal is to expand your network in the direction of your target job. That
means that if you want to transition from nursing to healthcare product
development, you’ll want to put yourself in a position to get to know people
who work for companies that develop healthcare products. Remember,
these are the people who can potentially help you identify and take
advantage of openings in your field of interest.
How do you start your strategic network building? By finding and joining
communities in your target professional area. Some of these might include:
• Professional associations, especially those with a local chapter in
which you can become active and get to know fellow members.
• Fellow members of your American Sentinel University Alumni
group who may be employed in areas of interest to your career
transition.
• Relevant LinkedIn and Facebook groups.
• People with whom you’ve had informational interviews,
• Former work colleagues or fellow students whose careers have
taken them in directions of interest to you,
Your goal is to bridge or broaden from your existing professional
connections into those that reflect where you’d like to end up via your
career transition.
