SQUARE KNOTTING
2513. The Japanese lanyards shown on this page are interesting
because they combine sailor's knots, fancy knots, PRIEST CORD KI"OTS
and macrame. No one except a Japanese or a sailor would attempt - 1'3

such a salmagundi.
In the left lanyard one cord is half hitched to the bight of another,
as fjJi2487, and, using the single cord as a warp or leader, a SOLOMON
BAR of six HALF KNOTS is made with the other two strands, as fjJi 2496.
This is followed by an uncomplicated section of two and one half
inches, then a SOLOMON KNOT (fjJi 2496), followed by another uncom-
plicated two and one half inches. It is then finished off with six
HALF KNOTS.

2514. A FOUR-BIGHT, THREE-LEAD, THREE-PLY TURK'S-HEAD.
2515. A knot similar to PRIEST CORD KNOT fjJi 2 379 except that it
has one less OVERHAND KNOT to a side and is made with a single
strand instead of a doubled one. 96
The lower half of the lanyard is a replica of the upper half in the
reverse except that the final knot is a THREE-STRAND DIAMOND KNOT
(fjJi693) instead of a TURK'S-HEAD.
2516. This diagram portrays one of the eight vertical panels that
lire repeated around the old sailor's handbag which is shown as one of
the frontispieces. The handle ( see frontispiece) has no square knot-
ting on it. The grip is needle hitched (fjJi 3544) and finished off with
a FOUR-LEAD, THREE-BIGHT, FOUR-PLY TURK'S-HEAD, edged and
tipped with turkey-red cotton cloth. The legs are FOUR-STRAND 25" 2.516
ROUND SII"NET, four cords to each strand, and the knots in the ends
are the ACORNS described on page 565.
Each of these vertical sections consists of twenty cords. They are
secured to a double foundation cord with Cow or BALE SLING
HITCHES, and a second (single) foundation below the first is secured
with CLOVE HITCHES. There are four horizontal sections in the bag,
divided horizontally with single foundation cords, and the first and
third of these consist of a series of "bars," each bar of four cords, 252
and every fourth bar around the bag consists of four uncomplicated
parallel cords. The remaining three spaces are filled up with four 25
different bars in no regular order, except that two alike are not
found in the same panel. The four are DOUBLE TATTED BAR fjJi 2505,
TWISTED BAR #2494, SOLOMON BAR #2496, and GENOA BAR #2500. 2511
The second and fourth horizontal sections are made of BEADED
BARS (fjJi 2 508), the strands between them being made up into SINGLE
TATTED CHAINS (fjJi 2 504). Vertically around the center in the second
horizontal section a SOLOMON BAR is arranged TURK'S-HEAD fashion.
2517. Below the fourth horizontal section SINGLE BEADED BARS
are made (fjJi 2 508 and fjJi 2509) and then a knotted fringe is added
(see page 584).
2518. The second Japanese lanyard is started as the other and
made into a long BANNISTER BAR (#2496) with a single cord warp
(#2493)·
2519. When close to the center, a DOUBLE \-VALL KNOT is tied, as 25"19
detailed at the bottom of the page.
2520. The center knot consists of two TRUE-LoVER'S KNOTS with
the loops interlaced so that they form a CARRICK BEND. A THRH-
LEAD, FOUR-BIGHT, THREE-PLY TURK'S-HEAD is added at the center.
