THE ASHLEY BOOK OF KNOTS
2506. ZIGZAG BARS. Three working cords are doubled and secured
to the foundation cord. The leader or 'Warp zigzags the whole length
of the structure and the 'Working or knotting threads are tied to it
with CLOVE HITCHES. A line of knots staggers right and left down
the length of the structure.
2507. INTER1WINED BARS. Three strands are doubled and secured
to .the foundation. The two center ones are employed as leaders. The
outside ones are turned inward and each is clove hitched to the near-
est leader. The four working strands are then crowned as illus-
.. trated and, continuing in the same diagonal in which they were
started, are clove hitched again, but to the opposite leaders, which
have been turned inward. The leaders are now at the center, where
they are clove hitched to each other as shown in the lower drawing.
After this the same figure is repeated until the structure has the
desired length.
2.5'06 2508. A BEADED BAR starts the same as the ZIGZAG BAR (~2506),
but several bars are made parallel and close to each other, and one
cord serves as a leader for only one diagonal, after which the next
cord becomes the leader.
2509. OPPOSED BARS. The illustration shows two parallel BEADE()
BARS tied in close contact. Six doubled strands are employed and are
divided into two units, the right unit being tied the reverse of the
left.
When two BEADED BARS have been tied in both halves, the right
leader is clove hitched around the left and the two leaders cross to
opposite sides. The BEADED BARS are made as before, but in such way
that a DOUBLE BAR zigzags down each half of the pattern.
2510. A JAPANESE KNOT that was tied with several SOLOMON
2S0~ KNOTS (~2496).
25 10 Two cords are doubled and laid parallel. At the center they are
doubled, forming two bights and four parallel strands. The outer
ends of the two bights are square knotted around the two center
strands. After this knot is tied the two working strands are formed
into the large circle and remain inactive while the other two ends
that served as leaders for the first SQUARE KNOT are each half hitched
to one side of the circle and then tied together in a SQUARE KNOT at
the center. They then are each half hitched again to the side of the
circle. Having completed this, they are brought to the center as
leaders and the ends which form the large circle are square knotted
around them.
2511. This tassel from a gangway fender was one of a pair. It was
made of white painted sash cord, and is the only thing of the sort
that I have ever seen. It is sailor work and was found in the Boston
Antique Shop. The end bears a TURK'S-HEAD tassel.
2512. A knot shown by Bocher. It is built up of several TRUE-
LOVER'S KNOTS, and only the two wings suggest square knotting.
First tie the top and center TRUE-LoVER'S KNOTS without any inter-
lacement. Then cross the loop tips at either side and pin out on a
board. After this tie the lower HALF KNOT of the lower TRUE-
LOVER'S KN.OT, reeve the ends as pictured, tie the upper half of the
TRUE-LoVER'S KNOT and stick the ends down through the lower half.
