SQUARE KNOTTING
2491. The CORKSCREW BAR shows the HALF HITCH tied in a uni-
form series which causes it to helix down the leader cord.
2492. The BUTTONHOLE BAR is exactly the same as the foregoing,
except that it is not allowed to twist. It is tied a little slacker and
forced to lie straight until the end is secured.
2493. The HALF KNOT, also called the MACRAME KNOT, is the sec-
ond of the basic knots of square knottin . Both of these are tied
around a leader cord or warp which hangs rom the foundation cord.
2494. If a series of identical HALF KNOTS is made the bar will
helix, forming what is called a TWISTED or BANNISTER BAR. Two
identical HALF KNOTS constitute a GRANNY KNOT.
2495. The SQUARE KNOT consists of two HALF KNOTS, one left and
one right, one superimposed over the other. This is called a SOLOMON
KNOT when tied around a leader cord.
2496. A series of alternating LEFT and RIGHT HALF KNOTS forms
a SOLOMON BAR, which has no tendency to twist. This is the typical
knot that is responsible for the name square knotting.
2497. The SINGLE TATTED BAR may have either a single or double
warp and is tied with a single cord in alternating LEFT and RIGHT
HALF HITCHES. There is no tendency to twist and the effect is some-
what similar to buttonholing.
2498. The DOUBLE T ATI'ED BAR is tied with two cords over either
a single or double warp, a Cow HITCH being tied alternately with
first one and then the other cord.

2499. If a cord proves too short, splice it while it is being used as
the core for a BEADED BAR (~2508). Tease the two ends and scrape
them to a taper. Divide each end in three parts and crotch the two
ends. Twist them to the right, and, with a piece of thread the same
color as the cord, serve them against the twist or lay. This splice is
described more fully as ~ 2686.
2500. The SINGLE GENOESE BAR consists of LEFT and RIGHT HALF
HITCHES tied alternately with two cords around a double warp.
2501. The DOUBLE GENOESE BAR consists of CLOVE HITCHES tied
alternately with two cords around a double warp.
2502. The WAVED or SHELL BAR is tied with two warps and two
cords. Put on five identical LEFT HALF HITCHES or T ATI'ING KNOTS
with the left cord while the right cord remains inert. Then layout
25'03
the left cord and tie five identical RIGHT HALF HITCHES with the
right cord. Continue to do this, alternating with the right and left
cord. Don't allow the cord to twist.
2503. The WAVED or SHELL BAR may be tied with seven identical
HALF HITCHES. Seven and five appear to be the conventional m.im-
ber of hitches to employ for this particular bar.
2504. SINGLE TATTED CHAIN is also called the "SEESAW KNOT."
Although much used in square knotting, this is not termed a bar.
The distinction is made because this knot is not tied over a warp. It
consists of alternate HALF HITCHES tied in two cords alternately 2S0S-
around each other.
2505. The DOUBLE TATTED CHAIN is similar but is tied with two
double cords. Care must be exercised to keep the knots uniform.
