FANCY KNOTS

I have never missed an opportunity to study Chinese lanyards

wherever I have met them, but the Chinese have carried the an of

knotting so far that there seems to be no end to their variety, and

whenever I have found a good collection of Chinese knot work I

have never failed to see something with which I was unfamiliar.

When there isn't an entirely new knot, there is either a new twist

to an old knot or a different way of combining two.

2474. Alongside is a Chinese lantern cord that was tied in a small,

                                   round, blue-silk braided cord.

To tie: Take a long cord and double it, leaving a loop four inches

long. Proceed to complete one knot at a time, taking care to keep the

length of the two strands, as well as the knots themselves, sym-

                                   metrical.

Hold the structure with the loop down, and tie a SAILOR'S ROUND

KNIFE LANYARD KNOT, sometimes called TWO-CoRD DIAMOND KNOT.

The method of tying this is given as ~787'

2475, 2476. The KNIFE LANYARD KNOT is followed by two oppo-

site (left and right) CARRICK BENDS a shon distance a an. The

drawing will give an idea of the spacing and proportions 0 the cord.

2477. The assembled knot which comes next consists of two small

FOUR-PART CROWN BUITERFLY KNOTS and two CARRICK BENDS,

which should be worked until the combined knot is nearly round.

2478. Two WALL KNOTS follow, separating two colored and

                                   gilded beads.

                                           2479.  Another assembled  knot is  in the center of the cord and is;

made ep of two FOUR-PART CROWN BUITERFLIES and two THREE-

                                    PART CROWN BUTTERFLIES.

2480. Around the two cords in the center is a THREE-LEAD, FOUR-

                                    BIGHT, THREE-PLY TURK'S-HEAD in silver-wound wire cord.

2481. Then follow two WALLS (~2478) separating two beads,

and below that a soapstone disk in imitation of mutton-fat jade. Ad-

ditional silk threads lead across the disk and these are seized to the

cords with silver thread at the top and bottom of the disk. In the

center of the disk is a silver TURK'S-HEAD.

There are three more beads below the disk and after a considerable

uncomplicated length of two parallel cords a tassel is added.
