FANCY KNOTS

2453. The five- art center crown is tied as already described on

page 392. It may ave five loops if the working end is stuck as de-

                                         scribed for '# 2450.

2454. This is a surprising knot, as it is quite flimsy until almost

completely drawn up, when it falls into shape nicely. Superficially

it cannot be told from KNOT '#2457, if the latter is tied with five

                                         loops instead of six.

                                                2.55. A FIVE-BIGHT KNOT with a six-part crown in the center is

the practical limit in size for this type of BUTTERFLY. The method

of tying a smaller knot of the sort has already been shown as '# 2448,

jji2451, and '#2453. The present knot makes a handsome TWO-CoRD

LANYARD KNOT which is shown as '# 2484. If another rim bight is

desired one may be added as in '# 2450.

                                                2456. A FIVE-BIGHT KNOT with a more elaborate over-and-under

arrangement. The first bight is laid out and pinned as in the fonner

knot. The second bight is laid around, instead of through, the first

one. The third and fourth bights are tucked through line bight and

around the second one. The fifth bight is tucked through the first

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      245"6

the first, around the second, through the third and around the fourth

To do this the end has to be rove both forward ,/

2457. A knot may be based on a hexagonal diagram and the

sequence of the crown will be over two and under two. The first

bight is pinned out flat on the board. The second bight is tucked

through the first. The third and fourth bights tuck through both the

previous bights, the fifth bight tucks through two bights and around

the third bight and the final bight tucks through two and around

the rim bights extended or else drawn up, which will make two knots

of quite different character. The diagram should be enlarged and the

knot pinned out on the board when tying. Before working the knot,

check the over-and-under sequence. Then work it snug, very care-

fully and methodically, with a pricker.

2459. If desired, the stem of the last knot may be introduced at

the side instead of at the comer. This also may be tied either with 2458
