3628. After a knot is tied in one end, the becket is ready to be
o assembled. The second knot on the bolt is the last thing to be made.
3629. The beckets on this page are taken from the end papers of
this book and are in the same order.
This one is from an officer's chest, which is much larger than a sailor's
chest, the latter being limited to thirty-six inches over all, as two chests'
o must stand end to end in front of each tier of berths. The material is
hard-twisted fish line, painted red clay and dark blue. Knobs are FIVE-
o BIGHT X FOUR-LEAD X EIGHT-PLY TURK'S-HEADS, over MAN ROPE KNOTS,
navy workmanship, probably. The eyes and necks are grafted, the re-
mainder is TEN-STRAND ROUND SINNET. The TURK'S-HEADS on the bail
are FOUR-PLY KNOTS. They are, top to bottom, FIVE-LEAD X FOUR-BIGHT,
FOUR-LEAD X FIVE-BIGHT, and THREE-LEAD X FOUR-BIGHT.
3630. Double beckets, for two hands, are very rare. A large offi-
cer's chest of teakwood. Knobs, THREE-STRAND MANROPES. Eves,

X FOUR-PLY. Bails, cloth-covered and wormed.
3631. A pine chest with slope front and back. Knobs, FOUR-STRAND
MANROPES' EYES grafted. TURK'S-HEADS, SEVEN-LEAD X SIx-BIGHT
X FOUR-PLY. Bail, THREE-PLY, EIGHT-STRAND COACHWHIPPING.
3632. A brassbound teakwood chest, carved cleats, hitched grom-
met, THREE-LEAD X FIVE-BIGHT X THREE-PLY TURK'S-HEADS.
3633. A Chisese brassbound camphor chest. Cleats of teak carved
to represent wormed rope. Knobs, FOUR-STRAND, TWO-PLY MAN-
ROPES, HITCHED EYES. Bails, EIGHT-STRAND ROUND SINNET. TURK'S-
HEAD, THREE-LEAD X FOUR-BIGHT X THREE-PLY.
3634. A pine chart chest, 14" X 14" X 42", with double beckets.
The long upper beckets allow one man to carry the chest, as charts
weigh very little. MANROPE KNOBS, long beckets parceled with blue
jeans and wormed. The short beckets are EIGHT-STRAND ROUND SIN-
3&35 3631 NET strands covered with blue jeans. Eyes grafted ..
3635. A pine officer's chest owned by Mrs. Frank Wood. The
center is UNDERHAND GRAFTING ~3554. MATTHEW WALKER KNOTS
covered with leather slashed and collared. White whalebone grips.
3636. A ship's papers chest, owned by Mrs. F. Gilbert Hinsdak.
Carved cleats, SIX-STRAND ROUND SINNET bails. MAN ROPE KNOBS.
3637. A small chest, with drawnwork fringe, whale ivory hearts
inlaid on the cleats. Becket made as ~ 3632, red-cloth-covered and
wormed with fishline.
3638. A slope-front teak chest, with wormed grommets.
3639. Mahogany chest. Knobs are THREE-STRAND STAR. The eyes
are ringbolt hitched. Bail (top to bottom), TURK'S-HEAD, THREE-
LEAD X FIVE-BIGHT X THREE-PLY, fine CROSS-POINTING. TURK'S-
HEAD, THREE-LEAD X FOUR-BIGHT X FOUR-PLY ribbing, EIGHT-
STRAND STAR KNOTS. Grip, FOUR-PLY COACHWHIPPING.
3640. A pine officer's chest. THREE-STRAND MANROPE KNOBS. Eyes
ringbolt hitched. Bail grafted, TURK'S-HEADS, THREE-LEAD X FOUR-
BIGHT X THREE-PLY.
