YARD K1\OT below and the whipping snaked. A similar becket in the
Mystic i\Iarine Museum has EYE SPLICE *2783 instead of a MAN-
ROPE K"OT at the top. 3

duck-covered. Bail, TEN-STRAND ROUND SINNET, strand duck-cov- 364'
ered. TURK'S-HEADS all FIVE-BIGHT X THREE-LEAD X THREE-PLY.
3644. Knobs, FIVE-STRAND MANROPE KNOTS. Eyes ringbolt hitched
(*3608). Leather collars, pinked, FIVE-BIGHT X THREE-LEAD X
THREE-PLY TURK'S-HEADS. Legs, OVERHAND SPANISH HITCHINGS.
Grip, EIGHT-STRA~iD COACHWHlPPING of black enamel cloth.
3645. This becket is of interest because it is on the miniature chest
which held the papers of the ship Acushnet. The name decorates
the front of the box. It was on this ship that Herman Melville made
his whaling voyage to the South Seas in 1837. The beckets are only
three and a half inches in their outside diameter.
3646. MANROPE KNOTS. The eyes and neck are grafted. 3(,44 640
When the point where the grip is started is reached forty-eight larger
threads (fishline) are substituted for those that were being used and the
joint is covered by a THREE-LEAD X SIx-BIGHT X FIVE-PLY TURK'S-HEAD.
The forty-eight threads are divided into sets of four, and are grafted as e
follows: Four knots are taken as *3555 and then four as *3556. This is
continued alternately until six complete tiers of the warp have been taken.
Then six more rows are taken exactly in the same way except that * 35 56
now comes below the first * 3 555 and they continue to alternate. This is
repeated until four rows of six have been completed, when one extra
thread is added to each set of four so that there are sixty threads in all.
Six rows of six knots are made this size, then the extra threads are
dropped out and the becket finished as it was begun. 3049
3647. FOUR-STRAND MANROPE KNOTS. Eyes and necks are needle
hitched. :\Iid-sections of nettles made into TWELVE-STRAND ROUND
SrNNET. Grip is coachwhipped of the same nettles. TURK'S-HEADS
FrVE-BIGHT X THREE-LEAD X THREE-PLY.
3648. 1}nusual pattern, perhaps unique. I have never seen another.
They are very old but never were used. Pinked leather collar. THREE-
STRAND MANROPE KNOBS. Duck-covered and wormed FOUR-BIGHT X
THREE-LEAD X THREE-PLY TURK'S-HEADS. The seizings of fishline
have riding but no_crossing turns.
3649. ·FOUR-STRAND MANROPE KNOTS. Eyes, bolt and grips are of 3b52
grafting. Mid-sections are TEN-STRAND ROUND SINNET.
3650. THREE-STRAND MANROPE KNOBS, eyes ringbolt bitched
(*3605), grips grafted, mid-section cloth-covered and wormed.
3651. A toggle grip becket, grafted.
3652. FIH-STRAND MAN ROPE KNOBS. Eyes and neck hitched over,
grip canvas-covered and wormed.
3653. A bedroom knocker with a brass plate. A FLAT SINNET hinge
(* 297 I) is knotted on the back of the plate. SMALL TURK's-HEADS
on a leather collar keep the knocker from shifting. SHROUD KNOT 3 £'53
* 583 is at the bottom.

3654. All the knots above the white whalebone grip are FOUR-
STRAND STAR KNOTS and the becket is of FOUR-STRAND ROUND SINNET
with a knot every two and a half inches. Beiow the grip are two
MATfHEW WALKER KNOTS with slashed leather covers (* 7 24).
3655. A small grafted becket with a TURK'S-HEAD at the bottom
makes an attractive bedroom knocker.
