Example: 2.5.2 Discharge Piping
Select the pipe size for a Duplex 10 Hp with 20
feet of straight pipe and six elbows: Table 2.3 Minimum Discharge Pipe Size 1
1. Select the pipe size of 2” diameter for 20 feet LifeLine Units Pipe Size
of straight pipe.
2. Determine the eff . pipe length for an elbow of Duplex 2 Hp ¾
2” diameter (EPL = 4.9 ft/elbow). Duplex 3 Hp ¾
3. Calculate the SYSTEM PIPE LENGTH Duplex 5 Hp ¾
SPL(2.0”D) = 20 + (6 x 4.9) = 49.4 ft Duplex 7.5 Hp ¾
4. Check this SYSTEM PIPLE LENGTH to see if it
exceeds the minimum pipe size. In this case, Duplex 10 Hp 1
it does, select the next larger pipe size from Duplex 15 Hp 1
the table (D = 2.5”). Triplex 5 Hp 1
5. To double-check the pipe size, recalculate the Triplex 7.5 Hp 1
SPL with the new diameter.
SPL (D = 2.5”) = 20 + (6 x 6.4) = 58.4 ft, which Triplex 10 Hp 1
is okay. Triplex 15 Hp 1¼
Quad 5 Hp 1
Quad 7.5 hp 1¼
Quad 10 Hp 1¼
Quad 15 Hp 1½
Pentaplex 15 Hp 1½
Hexaplex 15 Hp 1½
1 A larger discharge pipe size may be
required depending on the length of
distribution piping in the facility. However,
the distribution pipe size should not be less
than the minimum pipe size shown above.
For discharge pipe sizing, refer to standard pressure
drop tables. Total pressure drop in piping should
not exceed 5 psi.
