1. BEST PRACTICES: SOFT PLASTIC
1J. Gaskets, fasteners and O-rings–
Rubber or soft plastic risk is created when these materials get damaged or become loose. This risk can be mitigated through rigorous maintenance programs and administrative controls (e.g. inspection process/frequency). Any gaskets, fasteners and O-rings located downstream from sieves, filters, screens or other detection points should be metal detectable.
FOLLOWING ARE PRACTICES TO PREVENT DEGRADATION OF THESE MATERIALS:
1. Material of construction & dimensions should be appropriate to the application (i.e. thermal process specifications, chemicals used for sanitation, formulation considerations, heat exposure from rotating parts, etc.)
2. Frequency of inspection and replacement should be increased for gaskets or O-rings used in open-product areas or equipment that is frequently disassembled/reassembled
3. Minimize misalignment as this can create hotspots causing forced deterioration or pinching
4. Apply appropriate connectors or use torque-set tools to avoid overtightening gaskets and O-rings
