May Week 2021 – Leveled-UP!
By Soror Roslyn P. Woods
The May Week Committee was able to create and implement a series of workshops, panel discussion, and a college fair for
2021, in collaboration with one our sister chapters, North Broward County Alumnae Chap-
ter. Our theme to kick off our May Week activities was “Level-Up”. The total student partici-
pants of 383 exceeded our expectations.
Due to the pandemic the committee accepted the challenge to expand and enhance our
current program activities by implementing multiple seminars virtually. The Committee
members provided a wealth of knowledge and resources in making our program a success.
Soror Maryland Patterson-Hankerson introduced us to the Scholars Depot Program, which is
designed to offer high school students a one-stop resource for post-secondary goal setting
and transitional guidance from high school to college/career. The six week workshops
offered SAT, ACT, reading, and math preparation seminars over the course of four months.
The final component of the series was an extraordinary and engaging event, “College Read-
iness Panel Discussion,” moderated by Soror Britney M. Harris.
This year’s College Fair held on May 1, 2021 was definitely next level! Soror Brittany Lee-
Wright introduced Virbela, an interactive platform that enhanced participation of our attendees in an immersive virtual setting
from any location. Participants recreated themselves
as an avatar. Rave reviews soared from recruiters,
students, and sorors for offering such an innovative
accessible experience.
The final May Week event occurred on Sunday,
May 2, 2021, our 43rd Annual Program In Pursuit of
Excellence Academic Awards event, “A Virtual Rock Star Celebration!” We were able to present a historical $100,000 in awards
to thirty deserving Broward County Students. Seven high school graduates of sorors were also acknowledged. Thanks to all of
you for “Leveling-Up,” with your financial contributions and support.
