Try to get your cake into the oven as soon as possible after combining the wet and dry ingredients to achieve the maximum possible rise.
Always check the use by dates on important ingredients! If the baking powder is out of date, for example, you are likely to get a poor lift to your bake.
If you are new to cake decorating, start with the basics. A simple design done well is far more impressive than a complex design done badly.
