La Cagouille
Jerry and Cindy Hey may have thought the 2006
Raveneau Chablis ‘Vaillons’ 1er Cru we gave them
on arrival at La Cagouille was a little overt with
orange characters. Poor Lily, who was ravaged with
jet lag, had bumped over her orange juice prior to their
arrival and it had just been mopped up. The Raveneau
was super fresh. The nose had some mint, butter, lemon
and iodine. It was rich in the mouth and direct for the
vintage. There were blossom notes, plenty of mid-palate
sap and good freshness to the finish. It was so good, we
ordered two bottles.
Jerry is a really good wine guy. He has a passion for
Burgundy so we get along pretty well. He is a trumpeter
and arranger of some repute but never blows his own
instrument that made him famous. He has some great
stories about the musos he has worked with over the
years. He has even been in Michael Jackson’s bedroom.
It might be best if Jerry tells the story but it has
something to do with playing Michael a demo tape of
‘Billy Jean’ through a clapped out stereo system. I don’t
think he saw Bubbles the monkey.

Cockles warmed through with butter is the standard
starter here. They are still as good as ever. For entrée,
Jerry and I had razor clams, also with the requisite
amount of butter to highlight their sweetness and
nuttiness. Cousin Lucy arrived yesterday with the cuties
and a half a dozen freshly shucked oysters with a glass
of Raveneau seemed to pep her up immeasurably.
Cindy and Heidi had a plate of three different oysters
that they said were sensational. Lily and Patrick got
their fresh fillet of mullet with pasta at the same time as
our entrées as they were starting to fold.
The wine list at La Cagouille has not as many bargains
as it once did but there was a 2000 Domaine Comte
Georges de Vogüé Bourgogne Blanc listed at a more-
than-reasonable price that we decided to road test.
There were aromas of mango, grilled nuts and truffle
honey. It had good shape in the mouth and a high
glycerol feel. Colour was light for its age and there was
a squeeze of fresh lemon to the finish.
For main course, Cindy looked extremely pleased with
her cod. Heidi’s red mullet was up to its usual standard.
