                      PLUCK THOSE STRINGS

ockafairy is a relatively new non-profit organization that, in part-
Rnership with non-profits supporting families in crisis, is able to
reach out to anyone desiring to create musical expression. The efforts of
two of those partners, Tom’s Guitars and The Maslow Project, resulted
in an overwhelming volume of instrument donations. Denise Brown of
The Maslow Program connected instruments with families. The model
grew organically and children were finding new joy through music.

And donations continued to come in. Tom’s Guitars ran out of storage
space for the instruments – a great problem to have – so in late February,
the organization opened Rockafairy Hall in the heart of downtown – an
instrument library, rehearsal space, and multi-cultural event center, open
to all. Visitors may sign up for memberships, which include the ability to
check out an instrument and book rehearsal spaces at an affordable rate.
Membership is $10/month and is free to minors and individuals referred
through community support organizations. In addition, rehearsal space
sponsorships are available on a case-by-case basis.

One example of connecting instruments with kids is three ukuleles
and a guitar provided to Hearts with a Mission. Since then, one of the
kids at Hearts has started training other kids how to play the ukulele.
Another example is offering the space to visual artists to showcase and
sell their art at the event center, and volunteers are encouraged to offer
workshops and mentorship to those interested in learning more about
          a particular facet of art.
