My father was born on a farm in Iowa, but he was desperate to
get off the farm. Because of a knee problem he wasn’t eligible for
the military in World War I. He went to diesel engineering school
in Chicago and learned to operate diesel equipment. Working for
Great Lakes Pipeline to keep the gas flowing from oil fields in
Oklahoma to refineries in the Chicago area was his first job. He
moved to the company headquarters as the materials manager and
COUNSELING & COACHING was in charge of all the pumping stations in Iowa. Then he had an

sold and repaired tractors and farm equipment. Because he grew
up on a farm he could talk to farmers and knew all their problems.
After World War II, soldiers were returning to home to their farms,
and they needed equipment. They made quite a bit of money and
became very comfortable.

JIM: My mother, yes. My father, maybe because he was into

Q. WHAT ARE YOUR DREAMS FOR SOUTHERN
OREGON?
JIM: I hope it stays the same size. It's just right for me and my
friends. I live at the Manor and many of us enjoy the size of the
Rogue Valley. I don't know about the future of Southern Oregon; it
will grow, but hopefully not too fast.
Q. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE REGION? WHAT
BROUGHT YOU HERE AND WHAT KEEPS YOU HERE?

part of. I lived in LA briefly and I visited San Francisco and other
big cities around the country, but for me in retirement I needed a
smaller place with a lot of live entertainment. I don't go fishing. I
don't go hunting. I don't go hiking or skiing. I don't do the outdoor
stuff, so where I lived would have to have indoor live entertain-
