ABSTRACT
Millions of enthusiast for tropical fish in worldwide keeps them as their hobby and
it has become one of the most popular industries in Sri Lanka as well. This research had
been carried out to study about the requirements that could gain the best productivity for
tropical fish industry. For this study two types of fish were selected namely Guppy and
Wreck fish. Several factors that affect for fish population were identified. They are namely
local purchased quantity, breeding, deaths on house, imported quantity, deaths on arrival,
shipment and sick on hand. Deaths on arrival were ignored as it is out of the scope of the
research. Sick on house was also disregarded because if any fish was sick, it was kept in
separate tank. Data from five consecutive years had been examined in order to identify a
pattern in fish population. Further, deaths on house were analyzed using four factors
namely, temperature, salinity, pH level and alkalinity. It was noticed that that there was no
any pattern in each five years. The fish population fluctuated from day to day with the
number of local purchased quantity, shipments and other key factors. The only
controllable factor in order to optimize the fish population was identified as deaths on
house. Moreover, it was assumed that the factors considered equally behaved in each tank.
Finally, the model was constructed by selecting the significant factors that affect for deaths
on house.
