Parkside Football Club 1897/2017
By Steven Milne
“Half-forward flanker Brett Jacobs snapped a goal in the dying minutes as never-say-die Port Colts
scored a one-point win over Parkside at Merv Hughes Oval last Saturday.
The 1998 and '99 premiers displayed all of their champion qualities to fight back superbly after the
Magpies took a 28-point lead at the 10-minute mark of the last quarter.
The game ended in high drama, with Parkside playing coach and star full-forward Phil O'Keeffe
disallowed a two-grab mark about 25 metres from goal as the final siren sounded.
O'Keeffe supported the men in white for their decision making during the pressure-cooker match.
"I wasn't going to chuck a tantrum," he said.
There were emotion-charged scenes on the ground as the Borough players and coaching staff were
mobbed by club official and fans.
Club president Peter Ilsley gave coach Matthew Larkin a giant bear hug.
Larkin praised strong-marking full-forward Glen "Dumbo" Williams.
“Our desperation and our heart got us through again," Larkin said.
"We were never beaten to the end."
Hero of the win, Williams booted four goals. He was a last-minute inclusion after Brendon Doyle
pulled out with a hip injury.
Parkside also had winners in attack in O'Keeffe and Jed Pinkey, who kicked nine goals between them.
The 34-year-old O'Keeffe was marvellous, kicking 5.4 and grabbing 12 marks in a vintage
performance.
He showed amazing courage to play with 15 screws and five plates in his face, the result of an injury
suffered earlier this season.
The game was billed as a blockbuster and delivered everything it promised. It should prove a
preview to this year's grand final.”

After a one-point defeat against Port Colt, the Parks played a blistering first quarter to set up
Parkside’s win over St Albans at the Kings Park Oval.
The Magpies slammed on 8.2 to 1.0 to shell-shock the Saints.
