             day of climbing or save someone’s life. It is impossible
             to perfectly prepare for every contingency, and there-
             fore a flexible and critical mind is needed to solve
             problems that range from nuisance to near-miss.
                In this text we have striven to impart information,
             but also to situate the reader to be a critical thinker.
             In the end we will have offered a satisfactory text if
             the readers not only are climbing comfortably and
             securely, but also can COPE with each and every
             decision they make in the mountains, regardless of
             whether they perfectly adhere to our applications of
             the rope.
