Appendix G – Coach 10 Descriptive Statements
• Effective coaching is made up of many elements
• [The Role of the Coach] No matter what group of players a coach is
working with, their role is to assist [support etc etc] and challenge [set
targets etc etc] players to achieve their full potential
• At different stages of their development players are biologically,
psychologically, emotionally and socially ready to develop different
capacities
• It is essential that the coach understands the stage of development of the
group and each individual player to assist and challenge them
appropriately
• Based on this understanding..
• ….the effective coach brings a set of characteristics to their coaching
practice that reflects their personal commitment …
• …they organise activities that are relevant to the stage of development of
their players..
• …they create an environment that helps players develop a sense of
belonging, community and purpose.
• The relationships that are established by these elements serve to support
the players to perform at the best of their capacity as they develop
• To do this effectively a coach should develop a set of values that they
and their players live by
• These values reflect a commitment to personal development, group
development and a common purpose
• Coaches develop the capacity to manage and lead through their coaching
with experience, as they attend and reflect on the feedback they receive
and adapt their practice accordingly
• When a Club, School or County builds a structure and develops a culture
that supports these values, behaviours flourish that lead to success
