Chapter 2 – Literature Review

                        2.1 Introduction

The aim of this literature review is to establish a theoretical framework for my study
‘The Development and Implementation of a Multimedia Resource to Help Improve

Parental Involvement in Their Child’s Reading Literacy During the Primary School
Years’. It begins by examining research on the effects of parental involvement in

education with a particular focus on reading literacy, how technology can enhance

parent involvement in the child’s education and the school community. I will also
focus on the benefits of using instructional video technology towards the end of this

chapter, as this is the technology medium I primarily used for the design,
development and implementation of my multimedia resource within our school.

The following key themes will be examined as part of the literature review:
                           • Parental Involvement in Education.

                           • Parental Involvement in a Child’s Reading Development.

                           • How Technology Can Enhance Parental Involvement in Education.
                           • Digital Video Production as an Instructional Tool.

In this chapter I will discuss how parents and the school community play a

significant role in the education, development and well-being of a child. The school

community in this context refers to the pupils, parents, families, carers, guardians,
teachers, teaching assistants, administration staff and senior management. I will now

discuss and establish the effects of parental involvement in education and on a
                        child’s reading literacy development.

                        2.2 Parental Involvement in Education

“At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child's success is the positive

                                                     involvement of parents.”

                                                          - Jane D. Hull
