components of reading. From further examination of the literature and past studies in
similar fields, I was confident instructional video technology could help support the
parents in reading more efficiently with their child by providing them with examples
of how to implement these reading strategies. Providing online instructional videos
may also appeal to the learning needs and styles of our pupils as technology allows
pupils to learn in a manner that is innate to them (Groff, 2013).
1.4 Research Approach
To carry out my research, I used an Action Research methodology, a cyclic form of
research enquiry which has allowed me to explore and identify a need for change
within my workplace. I specifically chose to use the Educational Entrepreneurial
Approach to action research EEA (Crotty 2014). I found the EEA methodology
relevant to my needs as it promotes the use of technology to develop a multimedia
resource to improve the workplace. It also facilitated my desire to be physically
involved in the research and to include and collaborate with the parents, pupils and
teachers to create a resource that would be beneficial to all. This methodology
helped me to develop professionally by systematically reflecting on my own
learning, thinking and creative abilities throughout this process.
By using the EEA methodology, it encouraged me to use my ontological perspective
and educational values as a means to focus and guide my research and the content of
the multimedia resource I created. I documented and reflected upon my own creative
development throughout this process as I worked collaboratively with my college
peers, supervisors, work colleagues, parents and pupils to produce a multimedia
resource. I hope that this research will highlight both the challenges and advantages
of creating an eLearning resource that will help bridge the gap between the school
and home and enhance the reading standards of pupils.
Throughout this study, I will refer to the terms ‘multimedia resource’, ‘eLearning
resource’, ‘video resource’ and ‘Parent Learning Zone’ and use these terms
interchangeably. The term ‘parental involvement’, for the purpose of this research,
refers to both parental involvement and parental engagement. It includes the
participation a parent, carer, or guardian takes in supporting the child’s schooling,
