FREDERICK FOY (1785-1833)
FREDERICK FOY was the son of JAMES FOY SR (There were many FOYs named
FREDERICK and it is difficult to keep track of them all.) FREDERICK would have
been a brother to LEWIS FOY, in the Cicso Clan direct line.
FREDERICK FOY JR served as a member of the North Carolina State Legislature
from 1824 until 1830.
JOSEPH HENRY FOY (1838-1917)
JOSEPH HENRY FOY was the son of HIRAM WASHINGTON FOY and a great
grandson of JAMES FOY SR. He was one of the most distinguished and prominent
educators of North Carolina. He was a college professor in Eastern North Carolina
and began preaching for the Central Christian Church in St Louis, MO in 1876.
He was so famous as an educator Andrew Carnegie awarded him a pension in 1913
which was continued for his widow until her death. JOSEPH received a Doctor of
Divinity degree from the University of North Carolina in 1881 and an LLD degree
from the University of Mississippi in 1884.
In North Carolina JOSEPH was the principal of the Wilson Collegiate Seminary and
taught at Kinston at the same time. Many distinguished men were taught by JOSEPH
including a United States Secretary of War, Joseph Daniels, under the Wilson
administration, a governor, an ambassador , and several judges.
In St Louis he was principal of the Shields and Patrick Henry Public School. Upon
his death a marble monument was erected in Calvary Cemetery upon which is an open
book. Chiseled on that book are the words “His Life Was an Open Book.”
Dr FOY was an independent man and did not like to be under restraint of any kind,
so fr as h is thinking or acting was concerned. He was very liberal in his religious
