A CHESTNUT SILK GAUZE ‘DRAGON’ MAN’S SEMI-FORMAL
ROBE, JIFU
19th century
Vibrantly embroidered in satin threads of various colours with cranes,
bats and vases of flowers amongst constellation clouds and nine gold-
wrapped-thread five-clawed dragons radiating from the neck opening
to the chest, back and shoulders, with a further dragon hidden under
the flap, all above a band of tumultuous, foaming waves breaking
against rocks and interspersed with red wan symbols.
